## Ali G returns to theaters

Sacha Baron Cohen returns to his earliest breakout character in 'Ali G: Who Iz I?,' an Amazon MGM Studios comedy opening in theaters Oct. 23. The studio describes the film as Baron Cohen's feature directing debut, with the performer also writing, producing and starring as the swaggering would-be hip-hop authority he introduced on British television in the late 1990s. The release is Ali G's first feature-film appearance since 'Ali G Indahouse' in 2002, but the new production is structured as a standalone story rather than a direct sequel. Screen Daily reported during production that Baron Cohen filmed the project for Amazon MGM with a U.S. theatrical release planned for Oct. 23. ## Fiction mixed with real-world encounters

The film follows an older Ali G as impending fatherhood pushes him to try to revive his career in the United States. Its mockumentary format mixes a scripted frame with pranks and interviews involving people who encounter Baron Cohen in character, continuing the approach associated with 'Da Ali G Show' and the actor's later 'Borat' films. Morgana Robinson plays Julie, Ali G's longtime partner. Reviews published before opening describe the film as a collection of elaborate encounters linked by Ali's effort to make money and rebuild his profile. The character's return has also renewed debate over whether his parody of a white suburban poseur appropriating Black culture still works in a changed media environment. ## A theatrical release before streaming

Amazon MGM confirmed the Oct. 23 theatrical date on its official film page. Decider reported that the movie was not available to stream at launch and that the studio had not announced a Prime Video date. Any projection based on other Amazon MGM release windows remains an estimate rather than a confirmed schedule. Early reviews have been mixed about the film's targets and the effectiveness of reviving the character, while agreeing on its hybrid prank-film format and Baron Cohen's central creative role. Those assessments are critical judgments, not evidence of audience response or box-office performance, which will only become clear after the theatrical run begins. The new film arrives in a media environment very different from the one in which Ali G first became famous. The character originally exposed interview subjects by posing as an ill-informed youth television host; the feature places that act amid social platforms, influencer culture and sharper political polarization. Whether the old device produces new insight is the question dividing critics as the film reaches audiences in its opening theatrical weekend.
