## Summary
- Coach Ime Udoka plans to hold Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams out of one game in early back-to-back sets as they return from major injuries.
- VanVleet played Friday in Houston's 114-110 win over San Antonio and scored 14 points, including two game-sealing free throws.
- Marcus Smart is expected to start at point guard when VanVleet rests, but Houston had not confirmed its Saturday lineup in the cited reports.

## Friday's finish sharpens Saturday's rotation question

Fred VanVleet helped close out the Houston Rockets' 114-110 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, grabbing the rebound after Amen Thompson blocked Victor Wembanyama's tying attempt and making two free throws with less than a second left. VanVleet finished with 14 points. The immediate question for Houston is not the Spurs result, but how it handles its veteran point guard in Saturday's road game against the Atlanta Hawks, the second night of a back-to-back. Coach Ime Udoka has said VanVleet and center Steven Adams will be managed as they return from major injuries. The plan at the start of the season is for each to miss one game in back-to-back sets, according to reporting from the Rockets' practice availability and the NBA's player updates. Both were available against San Antonio. Houston had not identified in those reports which player would be listed out for Atlanta, so the plan should not be treated as a confirmed Saturday injury designation. The distinction matters because Udoka has not placed a standard per-game minutes cap on either veteran. He said the Rockets would be cautious about consecutive-night play, a different approach from limiting every appearance. VanVleet, 32, missed the entire 2025-26 season after tearing his right ACL before training camp. Adams missed the back half of that season and the playoffs after ankle surgery, making early workload decisions a significant part of Houston's rotation planning. ## Smart is next in line at point guard

Udoka intends to start Marcus Smart at point guard when VanVleet is unavailable, according to a report citing the coach. That would put a veteran defender and secondary ballhandler in charge of the first unit while leaving Reed Sheppard in a reserve role. Udoka has also said Sheppard remains an important part of the rotation. The Rockets have not announced an equivalent starting replacement for Adams in the cited reports. VanVleet's early games illustrate why his availability changes more than Houston's scoring totals. In Wednesday's 128-110 opener against Dallas, he scored six points but recorded 11 assists with no turnovers in 30 minutes. The Rockets produced 32 assists and 15 turnovers as a team. Udoka praised the guard's reads and ball security, and VanVleet said he was happy to be back in a game that counted after more than a year away. Against San Antonio, VanVleet's contribution was more direct on the scoreboard. He hit a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer to put Houston up 61-59, then secured the rebound and free throws that prevented one final Spurs possession. Alperen Sengun led the Rockets with 29 points, so VanVleet's finish was one piece of a team win rather than the game's principal scoring story. ## What to watch in Atlanta

Houston's visit to Atlanta is its first back-to-back test of the regular season. If the club applies the plan Udoka outlined and rests VanVleet after Friday's appearance, Smart would move into the starting role. Adams' status also bears watching after he played against the Spurs. Until the Rockets release a game-specific availability decision, those are expected rotation implications, not confirmed absences. That forward-looking workload question is separate from Friday's Rockets-Spurs result. VanVleet is back after a lost season, and the team is balancing the value of his playmaking with a cautious approach to consecutive games. The first actual back-to-back selection will show how Udoka translates his preseason guidance into a regular-season lineup, with Houston trying to extend its 2-0 start in Atlanta.
