## Profit falls while revenue stays flat

Tesla reported third-quarter revenue of $28.046 billion, essentially unchanged from $28.095 billion a year earlier. Net income attributable to common stockholders under generally accepted accounting principles was $787 million, down from $1.373 billion, a 43% decline. Diluted GAAP earnings were 22 cents a share. On a non-GAAP basis, Tesla reported net income of $1.697 billion and diluted earnings of 48 cents per share. The company released the results Wednesday, Oct. 21, for the quarter ended Sept. 30. Tesla’s adjusted earnings per share exceeded the company-compiled analyst consensus of 45 cents. Revenue, however, was below Tesla’s published consensus average of $28.341 billion. Comparisons against other estimate sets differ: Reuters reported that revenue exceeded the LSEG average of $27.88 billion. The differing benchmarks help explain why coverage described the sales result as both a beat and a miss; the reported revenue itself is $28.046 billion. ## Cash generation offsets some pressure

Operating income fell 56% year over year to $718 million, while operating expenses rose to $4.776 billion from $3.430 billion. Total GAAP gross margin improved to 19.6% from 18.0% a year earlier. Automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits was 18.1%, up from 15.4% in the year-ago quarter, according to Tesla’s update. These results show stronger reported gross margins alongside much lower operating profit. Tesla generated $1.531 billion in free cash flow, compared with a $1.092 billion outflow in the second quarter. Operating cash flow was $6.263 billion and capital expenditures were $4.732 billion. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments totaled $45.447 billion at quarter-end. The company said the quarter included continued investment across artificial intelligence, robotics and energy; it also reported a $1.9 billion increase in cash and investments during the period. ## Spending target reset; shares turn lower

On its earnings call, Tesla cut its expected 2026 capital expenditures to about $20 billion, from a previous outlook of more than $25 billion. The change followed quarterly capex of $4.732 billion. The company did not specify which projects account for the reduction, Reuters reported. Tesla’s update said battery availability continued to limit automotive volumes and that energy storage demand remained strong, with its highest-ever order rate and backlog. Tesla shares had risen during Wednesday’s regular session, then declined in extended trading after the results. The Associated Press reported a 3.6% regular-session gain followed by a 3.2% after-hours drop. Reuters likewise described an initial positive after-hours move that reversed, with the stock trading down 2% at the time of its report. These are time-specific snapshots rather than a next-day closing price. The earnings result is settled; trading after the release remained volatile in the reports available Wednesday night. Tesla’s quarter also included 486,532 vehicle deliveries, down 2% from 497,099 a year earlier, and 13.7 gigawatt-hours of storage deployments. The company said it ended the quarter with its largest passenger-vehicle backlog in four years. It reported that its Texas Megafactory began production with planned capacity of 50 gigawatt-hours. Those operational figures provide context for a quarter in which cash flow improved, but vehicle deliveries dipped and reported net income declined materially year over year.
