## LSU announces Brown's death

Dale Brown, the longtime LSU men's basketball coach who made the Tigers a national contender and remains the program's victories leader, died Friday, Oct. 23. He was 90. LSU announced his death and shared a statement from his family; the Associated Press and CBS Sports also reported the news. The university did not give a cause of death in its initial announcement. In the statement released by LSU, Brown's family remembered a man who put others first, led with his heart and loved Louisiana. Their words spoke to a connection that extended beyond the arena. He spent 25 seasons in Baton Rouge after arriving in 1972 as a relatively little-known coach from North Dakota, and became one of the faces of the school's basketball history. ## A quarter-century of LSU basketball

Brown's LSU teams won 448 games from 1972 to 1997, a school record, and reached the NCAA Final Four in 1981 and 1986. They won four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and the 1980 SEC tournament. Brown earned four SEC Coach of the Year awards and national coaching recognition in 1981. Those achievements made LSU basketball a fixture in an athletic culture often identified first with football. The two Final Four runs took different paths. The 1981 Tigers won 31 games. Five years later, an 11th-seeded LSU team beat Purdue in overtime and Memphis State on a last-second basket in Baton Rouge, then defeated Georgia Tech and Kentucky to reach the national semifinals. LSU's account notes that the 1986 team was, at the time, the lowest seed to reach that stage of the men's tournament. Brown also recruited and coached future NBA star Shaquille O'Neal and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, known during his LSU years as Chris Jackson. He took the Tigers to 13 NCAA tournaments, including 10 consecutive appearances from 1984 through 1993, according to LSU. AP described the crowds and energy at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center during his tenure, when the building became known as the Deaf Dome. ## An enduring place at LSU

Before LSU, Brown worked as a high school coach and in college assistant roles at Utah State and Washington State. After retiring in 1997, he remained a recognizable presence around the program. His career ended amid an NCAA recruiting investigation, and LSU was placed on probation in 1998, AP reported. The later honors reflect his lasting place in the sport without erasing that chapter of the record. Brown entered the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014, and LSU named its home court for him in 2022. Earlier this week, the university announced he would receive the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. That news arrived only days before LSU and his family announced his death, a final recognition of a coaching career that changed the scale of expectations for Tigers basketball.
