Army answers twice in the final minutes
Army beat Tulsa 38-35 on Friday night at H.A. Chapman Stadium after Dawson Jones made a 50-yard field goal at the end of regulation. Army's official game center, the American Conference schedule and Fox Sports all recorded the same final score, moving the Black Knights to 5-2 and dropping Tulsa to 4-4. [1] [2] [3]
Tulsa took a 35-28 lead on Baylor Hayes' 13-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Calloway with 13:25 remaining. Army later gained a short field when Tedy Kloska blocked a Tulsa punt and Hayden Hulbert recovered at the Golden Hurricane 13. Quarterback Cale Hellums finished that possession with a one-yard touchdown run, and Jones' extra point tied the game with 1:49 left. [3] [4]
Army forced a Tulsa punt, took over at its 37 with 51 seconds remaining and moved into range without a timeout-driven passing barrage. Hellums converted third-and-three with a four-yard run, then broke gains of 16 and three yards before Jones delivered the winning kick. It was Jones' third field goal of the night after earlier makes from 51 and 33 yards. [3] [4]
The ground game carries the Black Knights
Hellums carried 29 times for 105 yards and three touchdowns while completing seven of 12 passes for 64 yards. Godspower Nwawuihe was Army's most explosive runner, gaining 135 yards on 12 attempts and scoring on a 66-yard run early in the third quarter. The Black Knights finished with 260 rushing yards and did not commit a turnover. [3] [4]
Tulsa kept pace with a more conventional attack. Hayes completed 23 of 34 passes for 262 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Calloway caught 10 passes for 88 yards and a score, while Tyon Jones produced touchdown runs of 59 yards and another score as part of a 66-yard rushing night. Tulsa totaled 410 yards but missed a 39-yard field-goal attempt in the fourth quarter. [3] [4]
The victory was Army's fourth in five American Conference games and its fourth consecutive win overall after victories over Temple, Tulane and Florida Atlantic. The finish also continued a run of close decisions: Army had beaten Tulane 20-17 on another late Jones field goal two weeks earlier before overwhelming Florida Atlantic 56-24. [2] [5]
Army next travels to Memphis on Oct. 31 before returning to West Point for its Nov. 7 service-academy game against Air Force. Tulsa must regroup after its three-game winning streak ended, with the missed field goal and blocked punt standing as the decisive special-teams swings in a game that was tied entering the fourth quarter.
