A closer look at the new seats

Business Insider published a hands-on look at Cathay Pacific's new business-class and premium economy seats on October 13. The outlet reported that the Hong Kong-based airline is rolling out the seats on Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and described the upgrade as part of a $19 billion investment program. [1]

The cabins themselves are not new to the market. Cathay unveiled the Aria Suite in Hong Kong in October 2024, when the first retrofitted 777-300ER entered service on flights to Beijing, according to Business Travel News Europe and a later Cathay press release. Since then the airline has been adding the product to more long-haul routes as aircraft return from refurbishment. [3] [4]

Business class with doors

The Aria Suite is arranged in a 1-2-1 layout, Business Travel News Europe and Upgraded Points reported. Each suite has a sliding privacy door, which Upgraded Points described as the first door Cathay has fitted to a business-class seat. [4] [5]

The suites also have a 24-inch 4K screen, the largest Cathay has installed on any aircraft, along with Bluetooth headphone pairing and adjustable lighting, according to the airline and Business Traveller. The Aria Suite was named World's Best Business Class in AirlineRatings' World's Best Airlines 2026 awards, Cathay said in its Los Angeles announcement. [2] [7]

Retrofitted 777-300ERs carrying the new cabins do not have first class, according to Upgraded Points. Business Travel News Europe reported in 2024 that Cathay plans a new first-class product for its future Boeing 777-9 fleet. [4] [5]

Premium economy and economy

The redesigned premium economy cabin adds more privacy, upgraded seating and more storage, according to Cathay. Business Insider highlighted the seat's winged, cushioned headrest and footrest, and Business Travel News Europe reported that the seats include padded footrests and 4K screens. [1] [2] [4]

Economy on the same aircraft receives refreshed seats and an updated cabin environment rather than an all-new seat, Cathay and Upgraded Points said. Inflight entertainment across all cabins now includes features such as a lavatory availability indicator, according to the airline. [2] [5]

Where US travelers can find it

San Francisco was the first US destination to receive the retrofitted 777-300ER. Cathay said the aircraft would operate selected flights between Hong Kong and San Francisco from December 31, 2025, with flight CX873 from San Francisco and CX872 from Hong Kong. [3] [2]

Los Angeles followed on April 4, 2026, on flights CX884 and CX885, starting once a week and moving to daily service from May 1, according to Cathay and Business Traveller. Los Angeles was the airline's third North American gateway for the cabins, after San Francisco and Vancouver. Not every flight on those routes uses the new aircraft, so travelers need to check the aircraft type when booking. [2] [7]

Cathay serves nine North American passenger destinations, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Seattle, according to the airline. It resumed nonstop Hong Kong-Seattle flights on March 29, 2026, using Airbus A350-900s, which are not part of the Aria Suite retrofit, Upgraded Points reported. [8] [5]

The money behind it

The cabin program sits inside a larger investment plan. The Cathay Group has committed about HK$150 billion to its fleet, cabin and lounge products and digital innovation, according to its 2026 interim results release and an AviationNews report from September. At Hong Kong's pegged rate of about 7.8 Hong Kong dollars to the US dollar, that is roughly the $19 billion figure Business Insider cited. [6] [9] [1]

Chair Guy Bradley said in August that the group targets 150 new aircraft joining its fleet over the next 10 years, subject to market conditions. The group reported a first-half 2026 attributable profit of HK$6.2 billion, up from HK$3.7 billion a year earlier,, according to the interim results release. [9] [6]
