NBC aired "Third Rails," the second episode of Chicago Med's 12th season, on Wednesday, October 14, in the drama's usual 8 p.m. Eastern slot. First-look photos released before the broadcast showed Steven Weber as Dr. Dean Archer, Jessy Schram as Dr. Hannah Asher and Luke Mitchell as Dr. Mitch Ripley, ReelChicago reported. The outlet said the episode would stream on Peacock the following day. [1]

The premiere's cliffhanger

The season opened on October 7 with "Shots Fired," set three months after the previous finale and built around a mass shooting at a wedding, according to TV Guide and TVLine. Sharon Goodwin was no longer the hospital's executive director while she was under investigation over the leak of Dr. Theo Rabari's medical files, TV Guide reported. Rebecca Breeds joined the cast as Mallory Sloan, the new executive director, who clashes with Archer. [3] [4]

In the final minute, nurse Doris confessed on Goodwin's doorstep that she was the source of the leak. Showrunner Allen MacDonald told TVLine the revelation "goes against expectations" and cautioned viewers against taking the premiere at face value. TV Guide reported that the second episode would explain Doris's motive. [4] [3]

Romance and a returning doctor

The premiere also returned to Hannah Asher and Dean Archer, who is living with her after she kissed him in the Season 11 finale, TV Guide reported. MacDonald told the outlet: "I don't think she knows how she feels." TVLine reported that Sarah Ramos, who plays Dr. Lenox, appeared only by video call while on maternity leave and is expected back full time in the sixth episode. [3] [4]
