New controls focus on young adults
Kalshi said Tuesday that accounts belonging to traders ages 18 to 20 will be placed into a special account type with a default $2,500 monthly deposit limit. The company said the feature will roll out in the coming days and will sit alongside responsible-trading education and earlier interventions when activity shows signs of risk. [1] [2]
A second feature will warn a new trader with a balance above $1,000 when more than 25% of that balance is committed to one trade. Kalshi described the alert as a prompt to consider diversification, not a guarantee against loss. Event contracts can expire worthless when a selected outcome does not occur, and platform fees may also apply. [1] [2]
Family guides and existing safeguards
Kalshi also announced partnerships with Parent ProTech and ConnectSafely to produce guides explaining prediction markets to parents. The exchange bars people under 18, uses identity verification and says it highlights an ID Check tool so adults can determine whether someone else may be using their identity to open or access an account. [1]
The new measures build on trading breaks, self-set limits, self-exclusion and confidential support that Kalshi already offers. The company also operates an Inner Circle feature through which participating users can let family members or other trusted people receive information about the frequency and size of their trading activity. Why the change matters
Prediction markets have expanded rapidly across sports, elections and other real-world events, increasing debate over whether their risks resemble those of gambling. Reuters reported that Kalshi introduced the safeguards ahead of heightened trading around the U.S. midterm elections, when interest in political contracts is expected to rise. [2]
Kalshi presents itself as a Commodity Futures Trading Commission-regulated financial exchange, but regulation does not eliminate the possibility of compulsive use or financial loss. The practical test will be how consistently the new account rules are applied, how easily limits can be changed, and whether the alerts reduce concentrated or repeated high-risk trading among younger customers.
