Summary

  • WHO confirmed Nigeria reported one imported Bundibugyo Ebola case in Abuja on October 20; the patient was isolated and receiving care.
  • Authorities identified 44 contacts for monitoring, but the patient's travel history does not establish where infection occurred.
  • Africa CDC announced an October 28 virtual meeting of African health ministers to coordinate action across borders.
  • The U.S. CDC's October 20 snapshot listed 9,668 confirmed cases and 4,649 confirmed deaths across the outbreak; these are dated cumulative figures, not an October 22 live total.

Imported case confirmed in Abuja

ABUJA, Nigeria — Nigeria has confirmed one imported case of Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus in its Federal Capital Territory, the World Health Organization said in an October 20 announcement. The patient, a woman with recent travel through Uganda, was in isolation and receiving medical care. Investigators were still reconstructing her travel and exposure history, leaving the location where she became infected unresolved. [1]

The woman developed symptoms on October 7 and sought treatment at a private hospital in Abuja on October 11, Reuters reported. Testing was undertaken on October 19 and the positive result was confirmed October 20, according to the report. That distinction separates the testing date from the confirmation date; it does not establish when or where she contracted the virus. [2]

Nigerian authorities identified 44 contacts, most of them healthcare workers, Reuters reported. Officials were also seeking passengers who had travelled with the patient, while saying they did not believe she had been symptomatic during the flight. Contact identification is part of an investigation into possible exposure, not a count of additional confirmed infections. The reporting did not establish that any of those contacts had tested positive. [2]

Exposure location remains uncertain

Uganda's health ministry said the patient had transited through the country and that travel through Uganda did not prove she acquired the infection there, The Associated Press reported. The ministry said Uganda had no confirmed active Ebola cases. Accounts differed on the patient's nationality and full itinerary, so those details are not treated as settled here. WHO likewise said the likely source of infection remained under investigation. [3] [1]

On October 21, Africa CDC announced that African health ministers would meet virtually on Wednesday, October 28. The agency said the outbreak's spread across Central, Eastern and Western Africa required coordinated action. The planned meeting is intended to strengthen cross-border coordination, accelerate support to affected countries and improve preparedness. The announcement is a future meeting notice, not a report that ministers have already agreed on new measures. [4]

Dated outbreak figures and response

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's October 20 update listed 9,668 confirmed cases and 4,649 confirmed deaths across the outbreak. Congo accounted for 9,637 cases and 4,646 deaths; Nigeria had one confirmed case and no confirmed deaths in that snapshot. These are cumulative figures with an October 20 cutoff, not a real-time October 22 tally. The agency cautioned that investigations and case counts were continuing to change. [5]

WHO urged countries to maintain laboratory testing capacity, rapid-response teams, infection-control measures and monitoring at points of entry. Its October 20 Nigeria statement advised against restrictions on travel to, or trade with, affected countries. The agency said its risk assessment would be reassessed as new information emerged. [1]
