Summary

  • An Obama Foundation spokesperson told Fox News Digital the total cost of building the campus is expected to be about $1 billion, all privately raised.
  • The foundation put the cost at $909 million in September, $59 million above the $850 million it cited around the June 19 opening, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
  • Early construction estimates were about $300 million to $350 million, when the center was expected to open in 2021.
  • The museum drew 175,469 ticketed visitors in its first 100 days, according to foundation figures.

The new figure

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago's Jackson Park is expected to cost about $1 billion to build, the Obama Foundation said in a statement reported Thursday by Fox News Digital. Emily Bittner, the foundation's vice president of communications, said, "we anticipate our total cost for constructing the campus is approximately $1 billion," and that the money came from private contributions. [1]

According to Fox News, Bittner said the total includes public art, insurance, changes in scope and the installation of exhibits. Fox described the figure as nearly triple the original estimate. [1]

How the estimate grew

When the project was first planned, the center was expected to open in 2021 with construction costs estimated at $300 million to $350 million, Fox News reported. The Associated Press, in a preview published ahead of the opening, cited initial estimates of $350 million and put the cost of the 225-foot museum tower and nearly 20-acre campus at about $850 million. [1] [3]

On Sept. 26, marking the center's 100th day of operation, the foundation released an updated cost of $909 million, $59 million more than the $850 million figure it had previously given, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett attributed the increase to "additional amenities" added to the campus. The Sun-Times noted that the $909 million excludes $123 million in publicly funded infrastructure work in and around the site. [2] [4]

Fox News reported that the foundation's audited financial statements showed about $909 million in construction-related costs recorded by the end of 2025, when the project was described as roughly 80% complete. The two accounts use the same number for different points in time, and the foundation has not published a line-by-line breakdown of how the total reaches $1 billion. [1] [2]

Foundation finances

Fox News, citing the foundation's tax filings and audited statements, reported that its outstanding borrowing rose from $15 million at the end of 2025 to about $63.5 million by July 2026, and that donations and grants fell to about $151 million in 2025 from $195 million in 2024. [1]

Brian Mittendorf, an Ohio State University accounting professor who reviewed the filings for Fox, said the foundation was not in short-term distress. "In terms of the organization's overall financial health, again, I would say financial health looks quite good," he said, while noting that much of its wealth is tied up in buildings. [1]

Fox also reported that a plumbing subcontractor, Adamson Plumbing, filed a $1.72 million mechanics lien over disputed work. The foundation said construction manager Lakeside Alliance was responsible for paying subcontractors. [1]

Opening and attendance

The center opened on June 19, 2026, at 6001 S. Stony Island Ave., about five years behind its original schedule. The campus includes five buildings on 19 acres and a Chicago Public Library branch, according to the Sun-Times. The land and buildings are owned by the city, Fox News reported. [2] [1]

Foundation figures released for the 100-day mark showed 175,469 ticketed visitors to the museum and ticketed events, from all 50 states and 39 countries, and 206,684 visitors to the library branch. Officials had projected about 600,000 museum visitors a year, according to the AP. "It exceeds our wildest expectations," Jarrett told the Sun-Times. [2] [3] [4]
