What Tesla reported
Tesla reported third-quarter revenue of $28.05 billion, essentially flat year over year, and adjusted earnings of 48 cents per share. The adjusted result topped Tesla's published sell-side consensus of 45 cents. Revenue comparisons depend on the estimate set: Tesla's consensus average was $28.34 billion, while Reuters cited an LSEG average of $27.88 billion, which Tesla exceeded. [1] [3] [4]
GAAP net income fell to $787 million, or 22 cents per diluted share, from $1.37 billion a year earlier. Operating income dropped 56% to $718 million, leaving a 2.6% operating margin. The company reported $1.7 billion of non-GAAP net income; that adjusted measure is distinct from the $787 million GAAP figure. [1] [5]
Margins, spending and cash
Total gross margin improved to 19.6%, and automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits rose to 18.1%. Reuters said that auto-margin figure exceeded analysts' 16.7% estimate. Tesla's shareholder update attributed the quarter's work to investments in AI, robotics and energy, while operating expenses increased 39% to $4.8 billion. [1] [4]
Free cash flow was $1.5 billion, compared with a $4.5 billion cash outflow in Tesla's published consensus estimates. Capital expenditures totaled $4.73 billion in the quarter, and cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments reached $45.4 billion. The cash generation was a bright spot, but it did not erase the steep decline in operating income. [1] [3] [4]
Deliveries and the call
Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles, down 2.1% from a year earlier, while producing 464,391. The company said battery availability remained a constraint on auto volumes and reported its largest passenger-vehicle backlog in four years. Energy storage deployments were 13.7 gigawatt-hours, up about 10% year over year. [1] [2]
On the call, Musk said Tesla's energy-storage business was sold out, partly because of demand from AI data centers. Tesla's non-automotive gross margin was 23%, more than five percentage points above the second quarter, Barron's reported. Tesla's shareholder update also said Optimus production had begun at its Fremont factory; it described these as the first production-quality bots and said the company would continue refining the hardware and manufacturing process, without announcing commercial availability. [1] [7]
Outlook and market reaction
Tesla gave no numeric delivery or earnings guidance in its shareholder update. It reiterated a focus on maximizing factory utilization and said it expects hardware profits to be joined over time by software, services and fleet-based profits. The update also said Tesla is working to expand future battery supply and that its Texas Megafactory began production with planned capacity of 50 GWh. [1]
Tesla shares gained about 3.4% in Wednesday's regular session, then slipped modestly in late trading as the earnings call unfolded, Investor's Business Daily reported. Earlier after-hours snapshots differed, so the initial move should not be treated as a settled reaction. The next regular session will provide a clearer read on how investors weigh the adjusted-earnings beat against lower GAAP profit and heavier investment. [6] [5]
The report also arrives amid discussion of a possible Tesla-SpaceX combination. Musk said on SpaceX's call Tuesday that both companies formed special committees to discuss a potential deal, but no agreement has been announced. Tesla's quarterly update did not add details on a merger. [5] [4]
