Police investigation remains open
A 19-year-old University of Florida freshman died after a driver struck her on West University Avenue in Gainesville late Saturday, according to Gainesville police accounts reported by WUFT, WCJB and Mainstreet Daily News. The collision happened at about 11:33 p.m. near the 2300 block of West University Avenue, close to West 23rd Street. [1] [2] [3]
Police said their preliminary investigation found that a vehicle traveling east on West University Avenue swerved to avoid another vehicle, struck the pedestrian and then collided with that vehicle. WUFT reported that Gainesville Police Department spokesperson Art Forgey said investigators were still trying to determine whether the first vehicle had stopped or slowed before the second driver swerved. That account is preliminary and does not establish fault. [1] [2]
Emergency responders took the student to UF Health Shands Hospital, where she died from her injuries. Mainstreet Daily News and WCJB reported that a nurse at the scene assisted her until emergency medical services arrived. Police said the investigation was continuing; no arrest had been announced in connection with the collision as of Monday. [2] [3]
A first-semester student and a grieving campus
University of Florida officials confirmed to WCJB that the pedestrian was a freshman in the Warrington College of Business. WUFT reported that she was in her first semester at the university. The Signal Edition is withholding additional personal details because they are not necessary to explain the public-safety investigation. [1] [3]
The crash occurred along a busy corridor immediately north of the University of Florida campus. The public reports available Monday did not say whether speed, distraction, impairment or a traffic-control violation contributed to the collision, and police had not released a final crash analysis. The drivers' identities and any citations connected with the crash were also not disclosed in the reports reviewed. [1] [2] [3]
University Avenue's safety history
West University Avenue has been the focus of years of pedestrian-safety work. In 2023, Gainesville accepted an $8 million U.S. Department of Transportation award for a larger project covering 4.1 miles of University Avenue, WUFT reported. The planned route ran from Fred Cone Park to the Powell University House. Proposed changes included dedicated bicycle lanes, raised crosswalks, transit-stop improvements and measures intended to slow traffic. [4]
That earlier project followed several pedestrian deaths on and near the corridor, including two University of Florida students, according to WUFT. The history explains why another fatal crash on West University Avenue has renewed attention to the road, but it does not by itself explain Saturday's collision. Investigators have not yet released their final findings, and any determination of cause or responsibility remains pending. [1] [4]
