  • Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, under federal law setting the date as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
  • Registration and mail ballot deadlines are set by each state. Pennsylvania's registration deadline is Oct. 19, according to its Department of State.

  • Check your own state's deadline on vote.gov or with your state or local election office.

The essentials

Election Day for the 2026 midterms is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Federal law sets the date for electing members of Congress as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November in every even-numbered year. [5]

Every state except North Dakota requires voters to register, USAGov says. It adds that each state sets its own registration deadline, which can fall as much as a month before an election, and directs voters to vote.gov to register or check their state's deadline. [3]

USAGov says registration on vote.gov can be done online, by mail or in person at a local election office, depending on the state. It also lists the National Mail Voter Registration Form, which must be signed and sent to the address listed for your state. [3]

Deadlines closing soon

Pennsylvania's Department of State says Oct. 19, 2026 is the deadline to register for the general election, which it describes as at least 15 days before the election. [1]

Newsweek, in a state-by-state guide published Oct. 2 and updated Oct. 3, lists Oct. 19 as the deadline in Alabama, Pennsylvania and South Dakota as well. It lists Oct. 23 for Nebraska in person and Utah by mail and online, Oct. 24 for New York and for Massachusetts by mail and online, and Oct. 26 for Washington online and by mail and for Hawaii on paper. These dates other than Pennsylvania's were not checked against the state election offices for this report. [6]

Many states accept registration much later. Newsweek lists about 21 states with a Nov. 3 option, including California, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia, in several cases through same-day or Election Day registration. Rules differ by method and some require a provisional ballot, so check your state's page. [6]

The Center for Election Innovation & Research counts 25 states plus the District of Columbia that offer some form of same-day registration. It notes that in some of them, such as Massachusetts, North Carolina and New York, it applies only during early voting. [7]

Voting by mail

USAGov says absentee voting and vote-by-mail both let people vote before Election Day by mail or drop-off. Some states require an excuse to vote absentee, others do not, and in most states you must request a ballot for each election. [4]

Pennsylvania illustrates how tight the timeline can be. Its Department of State says an application for a mail-in or absentee ballot must be received by the county election office by 5 p.m. on Oct. 27. The completed ballot must be received by the county by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, and a postmark by that time is not sufficient. [2]

Other states differ on whether the postmark or the receipt date counts, so voters elsewhere should confirm their own rules with a state or local election office. [4]

Early voting, ID and polling places

Most states have a set early in-person voting period, and in most of them no excuse is needed, USAGov says. A few require voters to request an absentee ballot first. USAGov directs voters to their state or local election office for dates and locations. [8]

On Election Day, USAGov says each state sets its own ID requirements and most require identification to vote in person. It also says voters cannot vote online in U.S. federal elections, and that sample ballots and voter guides show the candidates and ballot measures before arrival. [9]

What to do next

The quickest check is vote.gov, which USAGov says shows registration steps and deadlines for each state and territory. The site could not be loaded by this publication's tools, so its state pages were not independently reviewed. USAGov also provides a tool to find your state or local election office. [3]

Deadlines that have already passed in some states do not necessarily end options, since several states allow registration at the polls or during early voting. State officials are the final authority on dates and rules for any individual voter. [7]
