Katie Zacharia has taken over as White House press secretary after President Donald Trump announced her appointment October 9. She comes to the job from communications work at Trump Media & Technology Group and a brief role at the Department of Homeland Security, according to Pepperdine University and NPR. [1] [2]

Her route to the position

Pepperdine identifies Zacharia as a 2007 undergraduate alumna and a 2011 law graduate. Its October 9 announcement says she served as a Homeland Security spokesperson and deputy assistant secretary for public affairs before moving to Trump Media, the company behind Truth Social. It also records work as general counsel for the nonprofit Fix California. [1]

NPR’s Brian Mann reports that Zacharia has been a frequent pro-Trump commentator on Fox News and Newsmax. In announcing the choice, Trump emphasized her longstanding personal loyalty and support for his movement. Mann’s account says she succeeds Karoline Leavitt, who stepped down in August, and describes the appointment as coming shortly before the midterm elections. [2]

Television profile and White House experience

In a separate October 12 NPR interview, New York Times White House correspondent Tyler Pager said Zacharia’s television appearances helped attract Trump’s attention. He described sources close to the decision saying the president liked her forceful defense of his policies. That is Pager’s reporting about the selection process, rather than a statement from Zacharia about why she was chosen. [3]

Pager contrasted her background with Leavitt’s direct work in Trump’s White House press office and campaign. He said Zacharia had spent less time working directly around the president and would need to deepen that relationship quickly. Her prior communications roles provide experience, but the new post places her in a different working relationship with the administration. [3]

The press-corps backdrop

Mann’s October 12 report describes the White House’s restricted access for CNN, MS NOW and Politico and a Justice Department investigation involving television networks that share pool video coverage. Those disputes are part of the setting in which Zacharia begins speaking for the administration; the appointment itself does not resolve them. [2]

Asked on NPR whether the choice signals a different approach to journalists, Pager said he expected continuity in Trump’s adversarial relationship with the press while acknowledging that the outcome remained to be seen. The early reporting therefore establishes her background and the issues awaiting her, without supplying a settled judgment on how she will handle the role. [3]
